Missoni for Target: SCORE!

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. Well, I'm quite fond then! Fond of my readers, that is. And so sorry for the absence. I do have some fun things in store for the next few months!

But first, let's talk about shopping! By now, most of you have heard about the Missoni for Target extravaganza.

If you haven't, I'll fill you in briefly: Founded in 1953, Missoni is an Italian fashion (power) house known especially for it's colorful zigzag knitwear, which became wildly popular in the 1970s. They have since branched out into other realms of fashion, including sportswear, housewares, perfume and even hotels. On September 13th, the company debuted a 400-piece collection for Target.

Naturally, people lined up at the crack of dawn and bombarded pretty much every store across the country when it opened. Early birds grabbed tons of stuff, swapped with one another, and many of them have proceeded to sell some of their wares on ebay (for a fine profit, I might add). Shoppers crashed Target's website that day. In the days and weeks leading up to the launch, I took a look at the full collection and picked out a few things I would have liked to check out – particularly in the home wares arena, but there were some pretty cute sweaters, dresses and shoes I had my sights on.

Since I'm a 9-5er, I went to work as usual on 9/13 and did not have time for online shopping on the clock. September 13th happens to be my wedding anniversary, so a very special and romantic dinner with Oliver easily trumped a post-work trip to Target! I heard most Targets had been cleaned out of the good stuff by the end of that day, so I figured I was out of luck. Well! I finally made it over there this weekend and can I TELL you how excited I am about my score? SO very excited! I snagged the only little "rolly-polly" suitcase (as I call them). It's got navy and white zigzags and it will perfect for both car and air travel (I detest checking luggage and have become a master at packing lightly).

Ain't she sweet? The inside has a chic contrasting black and white zigzag in a smaller scale: Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

When I saw it, I pretty much just grabbed it and ran. Even the cashier noted that I snagged a rare find. When I got home and had time to explore my new gem, I discovered a few handy little pockets and a cosmetics bag containing a laundry bag and two shoe bags in yet another snappy Missoni pattern!

Here's little gratuitous close-up of the inside tag:

While I'm not much for pushy crowds, I wish I'd had the opportunity to hit the stores a little sooner, but, alas, my schedule didn't allow for it, and my bank account is thanking me for it. I must say, I'm quite happy with what I got, and I suspect there will be more pieces trickling in here and there, as people realize they overdid it and return stuff.

If you scored something you're proud of, don't be a stranger! Post it in a comment here on on facebook, or send me an email! I'd love to see what you've picked up!

The Anatomy of a Passport Photo

Oliver and I will be attending a wedding in Mexico in a couple of months (rough life, no?) and both of our passports just expired. Rather than spend time and money having passport photos taken by a grumpy non-photographer shooting flat pictures under fluorescent light, we decided to take a stab at it ourselves. In the end, after figuring out the lighting situation, achieving neutral expressions, standing at the correct distance (not too close, but not too far away) and editing the photos to look more washed out and evenly lit, per the gov's strict passport photo guidelines, it probably would have been worth our time (and money) just have the damn things taken by someone else. But then I wouldn't have a blog post dedicated to the outtakes, would I? Here's how we fared:

Just getting the lighting sorted out. I can't resist being a pain in the buttocks. Oliver hasn't shaved yet. Let's get the show on the road….

Killy: Too dark, not amused
Oliver: Too much shadow behind head, also not amused

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug
Killy: Too much expression, not looking straight into camera
Oliver: Far too happy; crooked head (my fault, but on purpose)

Open mouths: not appropriate

Killy: These pictures are boring
Oliver: You're boring – I'm looking out the window

Killy: Are you sure that last one isn't going to work?
Oliver: You can't be serious

A Misty TGIF

I don't think I've ever actually uttered the term "TGIF." Until now, that is (see above). Its a balmy Friday here in Austin with somewhat overcast skies, although the sun seems to be making attempts to come through the clouds. Overcast days usually make me frowny, except when I'm at or near the beach.

Today, I'll leave you with photos I took just before a wild, but short-lived storm on our last visit to Ocean Grove, a lovely historic seaside town on a quiet stretch of the Jersey Shore (seriously, nothing like the Jersey Shore with which we're all-too familiar). This town is breezy, stunning and filled with non-party-ers. It was our favorite summer getaway.

Roadtripping to the Lone Star State

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug
We've been in Texas for almost three weeks, and it's high time I told you about our travels. It was a fairly uneventful trip down south – no big truck or traffic snafus, no weather-related hold-ups, no wrong turns that wasted precious minutes. In fact, planning how to extract ourselves from our apartment was the most complicated part of the whole ordeal.

Many of you are familiar with alternate side of the street parking rules implemented in most parts of most cities to keep traffic moving whilst street cleaning and plowing, etc. occur. Naturally, we had to consider the parking rules and regulations for our move, so as not to incur a substantial parking ticket on our last day as New Yorkers (disclosure: we incurred a $115 ticket for double parking two days earlier, with my parents' car, which was a real bummer). I was working like a madwoman right up until the day of our move, so Oliver had to take on the majority of the planning responsibilities, and let me tell you, he coordinated one smooth move!

On Sunday, Dec. 7, we were in our apartment packing up the last few things until 3am. It was hard to not leave a bunch of stuff until the last minute because our apartment was so small, and packed boxes took up, like, eight times the amount of space than our stuff did in shelves and whatnot, making living, working and packing there a real challenge. So, we crankily packed up and moved things around the night before the move, then had to drive to New Jersey, where we were sleeping. The next morning at 8am, we drove our borrowed car to pick up the truck, parked the car for the day and drove the truck into Manhattan. Oliver had precisely timed our arrival to coincide with street cleaning, which was to take place between 11:30am and 1pm. We got in at about 12, so he had to circle the block a million times to avoid the traffic cops and their dumb little ticket books. At 12:55, he cruised into a spot right in front of our building, minutes before the movers arrived (yes, we hired movers to get our stuff from the apartment and into the truck. That is time well-saved and money well-spent, my friends. Those guys are machines. Our truck was packed tightly with room to spare in less than two hours. Thank you, Divine Moving and Storage!) Some douche-nozzle with a champagne-colored Honda Accord was illegally double parked diagonally from out truck for nearly the entire move, making a very skinny passage and causing lots of traffic disruptions. The owner eventually showed up (wearing a shiny tracksuit that matched his car) and angrily drove off after collecting his own well-deserved parking ticket.

With our belongings finally in the truck, we cleaned the apartment from top to bottom (it was sparkling when we left. I was ready to move in all over again!) and headed back to New Jersey. We both had some work-related things to take care of the next day, so we came back into the city one last time, and drove back to the Jerz with my parents in tow for our final night.

We woke up bright and early on Dec. 8 and hit the road in our trusty steed.

My dad gave us hugs inside, then went back to bed. Mom weathered the 20-degree cold morning with us and snapped some photos.

In Pennsylvania we initially saw a lot of this:

but later saw more of this:

Much better.

There was lots of road work on I-81, in addition to manure smells, but pretty silos and barns eventually cancelled out the noxious odors. That day, We drove along Route 23 to 287 to I-78 and finally I-81, gliding through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and stopping for the night in Bristol, Virginia, right on the border of Tennessee.

It was a freezing cold night and a frosty eleven degrees in the morning, but the belgian waffles at our hotel on Dec. 9 made us feel all warm and fuzzy. We hit the road and eventually caught I-40 in Knoxville, TN. We had considered making some tourist stops along the way, as we were passing through Nashville and Memphis, but we figured we'd have more fun if we visited those places when all of our earthly belongings were not sitting a truck, begging to be tampered with. So, we forged on, but Memphis delivered a beautiful sunset for our viewing pleasure:

The Mississippi River wasn't a terrible sight to behold, either:

And Appalachia was lovely:

After an over-priced, under-tasty dinner at Chile's, or some such dining establishment, we called it a night. The morning of Dec. 10th took us through Little Rock, AK, which had the bumpiest interstate road we'd ever been on – very unpleasant in a huge truck! I suspect some federal funds are not being allocated correctly over there, but who am I to judge?

Along the way, we took some self-portraits...

...And made a quick pit stop for some essentials:

I kid.

Here are the actual travel essentials: coffee, water, GPS, phone, chargers, sunglasses and horrific radio

After Little Rock, we zipped over to I-30, which would take us to Texas. Our first sighting of the Lone Star State yielded exactly what you expect to see when you enter Texas: lots of stars and the shape of Texas everywhere:

We stopped for a late lunch in New Boston, where we happened on Randy's Smokehouse BBQ (we could not consume another sandwich from Arbys) and it was worth taking a quick detour from the highway. We split pulled pork and a beef brisket sandwiches, a side of baked beans, pickles, onions and jalapenos.

We then scurried along to Oliver's parents' house in East Texas, where a room was all set up for us and beer was at the ready.

The next day we hit the super market to stock up on some much-needed vegetables, after days of road food.

Ok, these are not the vegetables we were actually buying, but can you believe the size of those cans? I've never seen anything like it! They say everything's bigger in Texas. Let's hope I don't become one of those bigger "things."

Oops! Oliver caught me. A girl can't get enough of pork-n-beans!

After a long weekend of hunting, we secured ourselves an adorable house in the Skyview neighborhood of Austin. I can't wait to move in and share photos and stories as we explore our new home. In the meantime, I have some posts planned about our stay in East Texas, so stay tuned!

And We're Off...

We are on the road today, Austin-bound! In case you forgot, here's what we packed, among a few other essentials:

We spent most of last week and all weekend packing up, then cleaning the apartment. We actually moved our stuff into the truck on Monday afternoon and took it out to New Jersey for safe keeping in the driveway of my parents' cabin, where we've been sleeping since Friday, then we were back in NYC yesterday because we both had last-minute things to take care of. We slept in New Jersey again last night and my parents joined us for a final goodbye. We're on the road now and I can't BELIEVE it.

The transformation of our apartment has been pretty stupendous!

So much went into making this apartment not just livable, but one we loved and are sad to leave, from making our own headboard to, transforming the bathroom with stripes, carving out the office space and sewing up a storm in an attempt to cover unsightly things, like supplies and pillows to creating a pot rack and coming up with a worthy solution for our spices.

This is what the place looked like on Sunday night:

Pretty scary!

By Monday afternoon, it was empty and clean. Luckily for us, the new tenants wanted to keep the stripes we painted, as well as some of the things we added (the office desk and shelves, blinds, pot rack, etc.), which made our lives a whole lot easier! We hope the apartment treats them as well as it treated us.

I will not have regular access to a computer for about five days, but I've scheduled posts for the upcoming week, so as not to leave my dear loyal readers hanging in my absence! We will be taking pictures on the road, so I should have lots to share with you when we've landed. I look forward to reconnecting with you on the flip side! xoxo
