WHAT'S A STUDIOLO?

A studiolo is simply a room intended for study, invention and/or retreat. Historically, studiolos have been elaborately designed and decorated, with intricately detailed walls, whether wood carved or upholstered, adorned with art and artifacts to serve as inspiration. Included, as well, were bookcases filled with books, curios and objet de art, grand chairs for thinking and reading, desks for working and drawing. The most well-known studiolos – and the ones that set the standard for all studiolos to follow – are those created for Italian dukes: Ducal Palace in Gubbio, dating back to 1439 (a re-creation is part of the Met's permanent collection) and Francesco I de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, completed in 1570.

The Studiolo is my little online version of a private study (the brick and mortar version of it that lives in my mind is quite fantastically elaborate, yet cozy...). I come here to share what's happening in my life, chronicle design projects (professional and personal), design trends, happenings, and the occasional off-track philosophical musing or critical observation. This is where I get to combine my English degree with my interior design degree – it is truly a match made in heaven. Sometimes I prattle on about things unrelated to design, but I spin a good yarn (if I do say so myself), so read along!

WHO IS KILLY?
A New York City expat, Wolverine and former San Franciscan, I'm now an Austin, TX-based interior designer working at Cravotta Studios, a high-end residential design firm where I manage projects from concept through completion, handling day-to-day details while staying mindful of the big picture. In my spare time, I am active with the Heritage Society of Austin and sit on the Board of Directors of Inherit Austin, the Heritage Society's recruiting arm. I keep up with Austin's growing art scene and support the active music scene. I'm an avid thrifter, a wanna-be DIY-er, a deadbeat painter, a nature-appreciater and gym bunny.
